Teaching Appropriate Behavior Itinerant (TAB Itinerant)

Itinerant services are designed to maintain students with organizational, emotional or behavioral disabilities within the framework of regular education classroom programs. The itinerant programs offer consultation to teachers, direct services to the student, and coordination of information between the student, the parents and school personnel. These programs represent the least restrictive environment placement for students. Students enrolled in an itinerant service program typically are seen in one-to-one or small group sessions on a regularly scheduled basis, usually one to three times per week based on the student's age, needs and their regular education academic schedule. The primary goal of the itinerant program is to establish an intervention system that offers the students an opportunity to remain totally in their regular education program while receiving any required special education support.
Students recommended for this program have been identified by the IEP team when they:
- Benefit from a general grade level curriculum with accommodations and/or minor modifications as noted on the student’s IEP.
- Participate with mainstream peers for whole group activities with minor support from special education staff due to individual needs with organization, self-management or attention. Students should be able to be independent for most or all of the instructional day.
- Interact in semi-structured learning activities with mainstream peers with no adult supervision.
- Benefit from whole-group instruction and can initiate work completion relatively independently.

Itinerant Resource Room
Wauconda Middle School, Matthews Middle School, & Wauconda High School
Itinerant services are designed to support students to complete the work required in the academic setting. The itinerant program is a supportive learning environment designed to meet the needs of students who benefit from additional instructional or organizational support. This program promotes a cooperative instructional partnership between general education teachers, special education teachers and students. These programs support students so they can maintain the least restrictive environment placement for students. Students enrolled in an itinerant service program typically are seen in small group sessions on a regularly scheduled basis, usually one to three times per week based on the student's age, needs and their regular education academic schedule. The primary goal of the itinerant program is to help students establish work and self-advocacy skills to become independent learners who can request support when needed.
Students recommended for this program have been identified by the IEP team when they:
- Benefit from additional instructional and/or organizational support to access the general grade level curriculum with accommodations and/or modifications or classes as noted on the student’s IEP.
- Participate with mainstream peers with support from special education staff due to individual needs with specialized supports and services as listed on their IEP.
- Benefit from whole-group instruction and can initiate work completion relatively independently.

Student Service Providers:
The School Counselor:
(Matthews Middle School, Wauconda Middle School, Wauconda High School)
- Assists students with course selection, scheduling and developing academic goals to achieve transition goals.
- Supports students with necessary testing information and accommodations.
- At High School, assists students in the college application process.
- Assists students with short term developmental problems.
- Meets with students who are “At-Risk” of academic and social failure.
- Meets with students regarding personal issues.
- Trains staff and students through classroom or small group presentations in topics such as conflict resolution
- Serves as a member of the Wauconda Student Assistance Team (WSAT).
- Acts as a liaison between the students, families and teacher teams.
- Serves as a link between school and home.
The students may be referred to the school counselor either by themselves, the students’ parents, or by the staff. The counselor may refer a student to the school social worker of school psychologist when necessary.
The School Social Worker:
(Staff are available at all schools)
- Fulfills the mandated social work minutes for students with an Individual Education Program (IEP).
- Communicates directly with the parents of students with services indicated on the IEP.
- Meets with students who have concerns regarding personal issues.
- Completes the required Social Developmental Studies according to student needs.
- Assists with issues regarding familial communication.
- Refers students and parents who community resources when appropriate
- Serves as a member of the Wauconda Student Assistance Team (WSAT).
- Trains staff and students through classroom or small group presentations in topics such as anger management, drug and alcohol, bullying prevention, and social conflicts.
The students may be referred to the school social worker by the WSAT team, the students’ parents, or by the school staff.
The School Psychologist
(Staff are available at all schools)
- Completes the required initial and triennial testing as per the student needs.
- Meets with students regarding personal issues
- Serves as a member of the WSAT team
- Serves as data manager for the school; monitoring
